Lake McBride campsite busy in spite of incoming rain

Neither high gas prices nor wet weather is a concern for David Stokesbary of Cedar Rapids

He got his sailing in Friday while it's dry.

"I was kind of disappointed it was going to be rainy because as soon as it rains, I don't sail,"

Lake McBride in Solon was relatively quiet Friday before a normally busy Memorial Day weekend.

Officials say, it's the calm before the storm.

"This is the kickoff to the summer camping season so, this is usually the biggest weekend of the year," said Joe Wilkinson, Department of Natural Resources information specialist.

The park is expected to be full of campers this weekend, no matter what the weather does.

That's because many have made their reservations months before.

"If you want to go camping you've got your spot reserved regardless of the weather so we've had three quarters of the sites reserved for two or three months now," Wilkinson said.

Virtually all campsites at Lake McBride were reserved by the beginning of the week.

"There might be one or two sites this evening, but those will probably be gone by the time people get off work and grab those last couple.

Families like the Jones' of Center Point have made camping on Memorial Day weekend a tradition.

"These guys like to go fishing, and go for hikes and ride their bikes. It's a chance for me to get out of the office," said Mitch Jones said.

Friday was a chance for Dad to enjoy the day with his two boys

He says no amount of rain can ruin their weekend.

"Since we've got plenty of stuff to do inside, and the rain never deters us if we're just out for a hike or whatever, we're not going to melt," Jones said.
