Quakerdale, Lutheran Services expanding as BHC youth shelter closes

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Two private family service agencies have announced plans to expand their own youth shelters after one county had to cut services.

Quakerdale in Waterloo and Lutheran Services in Waverly will both be expanding their shelters to compensate for losing the services of the Black Hawk County Youth Shelter, the two groups announced in a joint press release Thursday.

From June 23 until the end of 2013, Lutheran Services will expand their Bremwood campus in Waverly.

Then, on Jan. 1, 2014, Quakerdale plans to open a 10-12 bed shelter at their downtown Waterloo campus to serve Black Hawk and surrounding counties.

The move comes after the Black Hawk County Youth Shelter announced they would be accepting no new referrals after June 23 and would no longer offer shelter services after June 30.

Federal funding for public shelters has repeatedly dropped, and a dozen shelters in Iowa were recently advised they would receive no more state money.
