CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The possible end to the college football rivarly between the Iowa Hawkeyes and UNI Panthers will be a major financial setback for Northern Iowa athletics. @

The Panthers made nearly $1-million dollars for playing games against 2 Big Ten foes --Iowa and Wisconsin last year. It's no secret the Panthers need that money to help keep the football program financially afloat.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has publicly said that after 2016-- he is recommending conference schools not schedule games against FCS programs like UNI--so not to hurt their chances to play in college football championship playoff.

Iowa Athletic Director Gary Barta-- a former UNI athletic department administrator--about the future of the UNI vs. Iowa football series.

Gary Barta said, "I had a great seven years here I'm a Panther inside--my wife graduated from here, but at the end of the day we do have two more contract years with UNI -- one in I believe it's 2014 and one in 2017 or 18. and my goal is to keep those games on the schedule and who knows after that. It's good for the state I enjoy anytime we get a chane to compete against UNI. If by some chance it can't continue it will be a bittersweet moment but certainly at the end of the day --looking at it from the Hawkeyes' perspective--the Big Ten perspective--I'm pushing for those last two games at least and we will see after that."
