Eastern Iowans collect school supplies for Oklahoma

When the Johnson kids heard about the tornado in Oklahoma they felt bad for all the families there.

"It made me a little sad for all the people that died and the people that don't have their houses anymore," said Estelle Johnson, eight years old.

The kids decided they wanted to help in any way they could.

"It's just something that comes to mind," said Tucker Johnson, eleven years old. "You just want to help other people because it makes you feel better."

The kids decided that the town will need all new school supplies. Now the family is working to collect supplies at Waverly-Shell Rock schools and at others across the state.

"It sort of spread like wildfire which is awesome," said Nikki Harken, of Shell Rock.

Nikki Harken posted about the kids' idea on her Facebook page. She's got friends helping collect in different towns.

"One of the benefits of living in Iowa is that we do take care of our neighbors and we're so good about helping others," said Harken. "Whether they are sick and we take them food or whether they break their leg and we mow the lawn. Whatever it happens to be we have that giving spirit of generosity."

The family plans to collect supplies through mid-June.

"I just feel really good about helping people," said Estelle.

Then they'll pack up a car and drive all the supplies they've received to Oklahoma.
