Black Hawks Petersen named to USHL All-Rookie Squad

United States Hockey League coaches and general managers have rated Waterloo Black Hawks goaltender Cal Petersen among the top first-year players in the USHL this season with Tuesday's announcement of the circuit's All-Rookie Team.

Petersen's selection makes this the first time the Hawks have ever had players on the league's All-Rookie Team in consecutive seasons.  Last spring, Taylor Cammarata and Eddie Wittchow were both recognized among the USHL's best newcomers.
"Cal's play during the closing weeks of the regular season was one of the reasons we had a strong finish and were able to match the franchise's record for wins," said Black Hawks Head Coach P.K. O'Handley.  "It's not always easy for a player to perform well in his hometown, but Cal has given everyone associated with Waterloo hockey reasons to be proud."
The Notre Dame recruit won his final six appearances of the regular season to finish the schedule with a mark of 21-11-1.  The run included his third shutout of the season, a 27-save performance on March 29th versus the Tri-City Storm at Young Arena.  The following Monday, Petersen was named the USHL's Reebok Goaltender of the Week for a second time during the year.  He had previously earned that honor in mid-November in the midst of a personal four-game winning streak to start the season.  Petersen ended the year with a 2.97 goals-against average and 90.6% save percentage.
The league began naming an All-Rookie Team at the conclusion of the 2003/04 season, and in that time, Petersen is one of only seven Waterloo players to be honored as a selection.  He is the first Hawks goalie to take a place on any of the All-USHL teams since Matt DiGirolamo was named to the All-USHL Second Team in 2006/07.
