WATERLOO (KWWL) -

There have been 11,637 victims of child abuse in Iowa in the past year.

Most were cases of neglect. Nine percent involved the physical abuse of a child.

Child abuse prevention efforts continue through agencies like the Family & Children's Council of Black Hawk County, and this year those efforts get some help from the United Auto Workers Union Local 838.

Members of UAW Local 838 are issuing a "Call to Action" for community involvement to help the Family & Children's Council reach its $5,000 May Challenge match.

Local 838 is asking its members and the Cedar Valley community to help by either making a monetary donation or by becoming a volunteer in the FCC efforts to fight child abuse and strengthen Iowa families.

The Union will present FCC with a check on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. The event will be held at the Local 838 building at 2615 Washington Street in Waterloo.
