CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Savannah Yossi of Cedar Rapids slept through Sunday night's storm.

On Monday, she couldn't believe the mess she woke up to.

"It was a wind storm that only lasted for a few minutes, but that did all this damage," she said.

Trees limbs littered yards in her southwest Cedar Rapids neighborhood.

Yossi was among the thousands without power after straight line winds knocked one tree into a transmission line, wiping out power for some time.

"When a transmission line goes down that affects a lot of customers, but as we can see right now, the winds here were just so strong," said Heather Holmes, spokesperson with Alliant Energy.

Downed trees also damaged cars and houses.

In one southeast Cedar Rapids neighborhood, a giant, 50-year-old ash tree was blown onto Bob Grafton's home.

"It's just kind of heartbreaking because it's a tree-lined street, and it gives the neighborhood kind of an iconic feel," Grafton said.

The winds treated a commercial jet parked at the Eastern Iowa Airport like a toy, pushing it more than 10 feet into a jet bridge.

The jet sustained damage.

In Benton County, 70 mile-per-hour winds caused a car dealership to lose part of its storage shed.

Debris was blown clear across Highway 30.

Workers were able to get most of the inventory out of harm's way before the storm hit.

"That's a cement structure with about 80 vehicles inside, so everything's fine in there, but this is the building that took the hit," said Bill Grovert, owner of Grovert Chevrolet.

A mile west, a Department of Transportation shed was flattened.

A nearby farmstead was virtually wiped out.

A stretch of power poles lining Highway 30 were also downed, all part of this season's first significant storm.
