WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Average retail gasoline prices in Iowa have risen 34.2 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.01 per gallon yesterday, according to GasBuddy.com.

While Iowa gas prices are usually well below the national average, that's not the case this time. The Iowa average price is 33 cents more than the national average, which is $3.67 per gallon.

"I don't believe I've ever seen gasoline prices in the Midwest surpass California," said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan in a news release.

Prices in Iowa on Sunday were 52.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 60.5 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, according to GasBuddy's report.

GasBuddy does a daily survey of 2,036 gas outlets in Iowa.
