NEW HAMPTON (KWWL) -

Residents in New Hampton are cleaning up after severe weather blew through eastern Iowa Sunday night.

The sounds of chainsaws could be heard throughout the city, working to cut up downed trees and branches.

As folks woke up, they got the first glances in the daylight the damage. For Max and Kathie Steege, they couldn't even get out of their front door.

"We were just barely in the basement and all the sudden it was like, 'boom,'" said Kathie Steege.

The Steeges were at a graduation party at Mikkelson Park before the storm hit. High winds and damaging rains took out trees, even uprooting them.

"It happened so fast," said Emily Sanford, New Hampton resident. "I mean, it was calm, and all of a sudden it was super windy."

Sanford woke up to a tree in front of her garage. She said she's lucky her parents live a couple blocks away and were able to take her to work.

"Good thing that everyone's OK and it didn't fall on the house of anyone, I guess," said Sanford.

Damage was widespread through New Hampton and beyond. A farm just outside of town saw winds were so strong it took out a machine shed, leaving debris throughout the field.
