Food drive kicks off Eastern Iowa Freedom From Hunger

Some Eastern Iowans are working to create Freedom from Hunger. The annual food drive for the HACAP food reservoir kicked off today at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids.

The drive takes place at area businesses and community events through the end of August and is the largest food drive in Linn County.

People at Sunday's Cedar Rapids Kernels game could donate food or money. Each dollar given to HACAP has $12 worth of purchasing power.

"The need is high during the summer when kids are out of school," said Amanda Pieper, Director of HACAP Food Reservoir. "There's a huge need and we're here to help curb that if they're in that situation."

This year the goal is to collect enough for 200,000 meals, more than the organization brought in last year. This is the eleventh year for the drive
