Local YWCA launches effort to renovate 89-year-old building

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A restored home for the YWCA of Black Hawk County could be on the horizon.

People gathered Thursday evening to formally launch the organization's "Preserving the Past -- Ensuring the Future" capital campaign. The fundraiser will go toward renovating and reconfiguring the 89-year-old building, built in 1924.

The YWCA announced that just over $1 million of their $6.1 million goal has been raised thus far. If the organization can raise $1.5 million, the Black Hawk County Gaming Association will provide a $1.2 million challenge grant to their cause.

The YWCA looks to eliminating racism and empowering women, offering wellness services, child care, and family services among other things.
