DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Police arrested a Dubuque man after he allegedly got into an altercation with another man.

Christopher Barginear, 29, of 765 Alpine St., Dubuque, was arrested Thursday and charged with assault while participating in a felony, going armed with intent and possession of a firearm by a felon. All are Class D felonies.

Officials say the shooting occurred in the area of 24th and Jackson streets, where Barginear and others had an altercation with Walton E. Womack, 37, of Dubuque.

Barginear allegedly discharged a handgun, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, according to police.

Barginear is being held in the Dubuque County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Dubuque police are investigating a report of shots fired late Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to the 2400 block of White Street in the downtown area. Through the evening, police had block closed to traffic.

Dubuque Police Lt. Scott Baxter said at 7 p.m. Thursday there were no known injuries and police actually have no physical evidence of any shots fired.

Jeremy Nicolls lives in the 2400 block of White and said there was a strong police presence on the scene.

"It was pretty crazy, there was cops on each end of the block, all the way around, I mean, pretty much circling the whole block," Nicolls said. "The alley was blocked. I could see behind one of the businesses up here. There was a couple of [cops] with guns that were pointed at the house."

Baxter said police applied for a search warrant for a home in the area. At 7 p.m., Baxter said there were no charges or arrests, though police took in some people for questioning.
