Another Democrat eyeing First Congressional District seat

Another Democrat is eyeing a run for Bruce Braley's congressional seat.

Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon told us she is seriously considering a bid for the seat being vacated by Bruce Braley in 2014. She has served on the Cedar Rapids City Council since 2008.

Vernon thinks her experiences on the city council and building her own business and family qualify her to run. Vernon believes during her time on the city council she's helped fix many problems in Cedar Rapids and feels she could use those problem solving skills to solve the many problems facing our nation. She says she has the experience and tenacity to represent Iowa in Congress.

Former Democratic State Senator Swati Dandekar announced last week she was forming an exploratory committee to enter the race.

Also in the running is Democratic State Representative Pat Murphy from Dubuque and Republicans Rod Blum and Cedar Rapids businessman Steve Rathje.

Congressman Braley announced in February he would run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tom Harkin.
