CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The City of Cedar Rapids says a portion of 1st Avenue East, in front of the U.S. Cellular Center, will reopen late Saturday.

Public works says the portion of 1st Avenue East, between 1st Street SE and 5th Street SE, has been closed since Wednesday to install a skywalk at the new hotel and convention center.

Eastbound 1st Avenue traffic currently detours onto 1st Street SE to 3rd Avenue SE and then to 5th Street SE to get back on 1st Avenue.

Westbound traffic currently detours onto 5th Street SE to 2nd Avenue SE and to 1st Street SE to get back to 1st Avenue.

The public works department says the road will re-open late Saturday, depending on weather. They say periodic lane closures will happen over the next seven weeks as exterior work on the convention center is completed.
