IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

An Iowa City man found guilty of murdering an Iowa City landlord is appealing his life sentence.

Justin Marshall, 22, filed the appeal with the Iowa Supreme Court.

Marshall was convicted in February in the 2009 shooting death of 64-year-old John Versypt.

Police said Versypt was checking on his properties in Iowa City when he was shot in the head during an attempted robbery.

Marshall faces a mandatory life sentence in prison. He said he was wrongly convicted.
