Josh Evans: Athlete of the Week

MARION (KWWL) -

There's no question that Linn-Mar's Josh Evans is driven to be the best --

You can just see it. He wants it. He wants to be the best, and he's willing to train and do what he needs to do for it.

Josh came in to the 20-13 season with a fair amount of success with 3 previous 3rd place finishes on Drake's famed blue oval -- but the Lion's top distance runner kicked it up a big notch at this year's Drake Relays --

in his first race -- however -- Josh got nipped at the tape by Gilbert's Thomas Pollard in the 32-hundred --

There's nothing more I could have done, I wasn't disappointed, but I think just that night when I realized... I saw him getting that flag, and I was kind of... you know, I want a flag too."

After that race -- something inside took over -- the Linn-Mar junior ran a 1:55 800 anchor leg to give the Lion's a Drake Relays title -- one day later -- he made history running 4 minutes, 10 seconds in the 16-hundred -- breaking the oldest standing boys record at the Drake Relays --

Evans: "I had the training under me, it was perfect conditions, it was a great race, and I had guys up in front of me for at least the first half to chase, and it just all came together."

Josh was virtually alone for the final 400 of the race -- but he said he wasn't aware of that -- which helped him take down the 34 year old state record --

Evans: "The announcer guy helped. He made it sound like Thomas was a lot closer than he ended up being. I figured he was right on my tail, so I kept going. I was just praying and trying to push as hard as I possibly could."

Next week -- he'll attempt to capture his first career state title -- in fact he'll go after four -- which is even more significant as Josh hopes to help the Lions to a team title as well

Evans: "Our sprinters are having a phenomenal year. They're running so fast, and our hurdles are coming together, and we've got some field events that are starting to show up. I think it's really cool how everybody's starting to work together, and we really realize that we can accomplish something."
