Poyner students raise money for Elizabeth Collins memorial

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

Emma Larsen and Hannah Cary miss their classmate, Elizabeth Collins.

"She was a fun and nice girl," said Larsen, Classmate of Collins.

"She was wild. She always had a really big smile. She wasn't nervous or mad to do anything," said Cary, Classmate of Collins.

Collins would have been a fourth grade student at Poyner this year and her sister still attends the school.

"It's been a long year. But I do believe that we have come together as a staff, as a school, as a family to remember Elizabeth and I don't think we will ever forget her," said Trista Manternach, Principal.

Manternach said her students wanted to do something to remember their friend and classmate so they decided to raise money for a bench to be placed in front of the school.

"We are doing a penny power thing where we are going to get a pink bench and we're raising money for Elizabeth Collins. We put a jug, a milk jug in every classroom so they can bring in money."

"We want them to be able to go somewhere on campus that will give them a place that they can remember those memories that they have of her. So having it right in front will be the perfect spot, just walking up to Poyner and seeing that bright pink bench will help us all remember that she is still here with us."

The bench costs $800 and the total after Thursday morning's collection was $1,140.
