Ghost players returning to Field of Dreams

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The new owner of the Field of Dreams announced Thursday morning the Ghost Players are returning this summer to the field.

Go the Distance Baseball president and CEO Denise Stillman addressed those at the Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau's Annual Hospitality Breakfast. In an announcement complete with the appearance of several ghost players, she told the crowd the guys are coming home.

"From the beginning, I knew the Ghosts needed to be back at the field, and it just had to be the right, the right place," Stillman said. "When you think of the movie, you think of the ghosts going into the corn, and if there's no ghosts coming out of the corn, some of the magic isn't there."

The ghosts haven't appeared on the field since 2007. Ghost Player Hank Lucas said he and his fellow ghosts are excited to return.

"Well, it's just like the movie is, you know, the Field of Dreams," he said. "The son gets his second chance with his dad just to play simple catch and all that kind of stuff. Well, this is going to be our second chance, too."

The Ghost Players will make their first appearance Sunday, July 7 and appear on the field every other Sunday thereafter, through September.

Go the Distance Baseball is preserving the original Field of Dreams movie site while building a 24-field youth baseball and softball tournament complex next to it, called All-Star Ballpark Heaven. Stillman said she and other developers expect to break ground this summer, hopefully in June. The 24 fields will be built in a two-phase process, with just 12 of the fields coming in the first phase.
