MidAmerican wind energy expansion could help Eastern Iowa businesses

TAMA COUNTY (KWWL) -

Brad Crawford owns the Maid-Rite in Toledo. With a location right off the highway, he sees trucks pass by whenever there's a big construction project in the area, like the Vienna Wind Farm Project a few miles away.

"They're hauling the turbines and the wings and the towers," said Crawford.

The wind farm is owned by Mid-American Energy. The company announced Wednesday that it will spend $1.9 billion to expand its wind energy production in Iowa.

"By the time this project is complete, if approved we would be capable of generating approximately 39 percent of our retail generation output through wind generation," said Tina Potthoff, Media Relations Manager for MidAmerican Energy.

The company says the investment will help lower future electric rates, which Governor Terry Branstad says will help bring new businesses to Iowa.

"Reliable, low-cost energy from renewable sources is a great selling point as we work to bring more industry and business and jobs here," said Branstad.

The company has not decided where the new wind farms will go but want to stay where the wind is in Iowa, areas like Tama County.

"Anything that can come to Tama County and the Toledo area is going to be a benefit to the local businesses in the community," said Crawford.
