CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Kids across eastern Iowa went to school on two wheels Wednesday.

At Grant Wood Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, dozens of kids participated in National Bike to School Day.

The event teaches kids, parents, and educators about bike safety. Each of the kids who rode got a free helmet courtesy of Variety -- The Children's Charity.

Adults also rode with kids.

"I think it's important for kids to get out and do this to remain active and healthy," said Kerri Leu, school counselor at Grant Wood. "It helps increase their brain knowledge, too. By being active physically, they're able to think more clearly."

Bike to School Day had pre-planned routes so kids could ride with members of the Safe Kids Coalition and the Cedar Rapids Bicycle Advisory Coalition.
