DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

An exploding sound rocked downtown Dubuque Monday afternoon shortly before 4 p.m. when an underground electrical fire blew off a manhole cover.

It happened in an alley behind the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center at 855 Central Avenue. Nobody was injured.

Following the incident, 94 Alliant Energy customers were without power. By 6:15 Monday evening, however, the company restored power to all those customers.

People near the scene at the time of the fire said the sound made them think there had been a car crash.

As of Monday evening, Alliant had not yet ascertained the exact cause of the fire and explosion-like sound, Alliant communications program manager Heather Holmes said.
