Health concerns force Niemeyer to resign at West

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The state's all-time softball wins leader won't be coaching at Waterloo West after all.  Larry Niemeyer resigned his position on Sunday citing health concerns.  The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported the coach is being treated for kidney disease.

The unexpected move leaves the Wahawk softball without a coach one day prior to the start of the season.  Assistant coaches Sarah Saladino and Cassie Knutson are expected to pick up the slack during the hiring process.

Waterloo West is set to play their first contest on May 21.
