CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -
Several people spent their Sunday afternoon learning about the architecture of Louis Sullivan.
St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids hosted a forum about the well-known architect, who was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. The church is one of six buildings Sullivan had a hand in designing in the state of Iowa and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Experts say Sullivan is the father of American architecture.
"Iowa was one of the states, one of the people, who were at the forefront of bringing in a new architectural style to the Untied States, a style that epitomized the prairie on which we built and a style which was unique and distinct, alone, to the United States," said David Wendell, Coordinator for St. Paul's United Methodist Church Louis Sullivan 100th Anniversary Celebration.
Another Cedar Rapids building designed by Sullivan was damaged in the floods of 2008. Now there's plans to restore the old People's Savings Bank to it's 1911 appearance as a restaurant.
