Nearly two decades ago, Diane Bond started at Commercial Vehicle Group as an entry level person. Her goal was to work her way up, and five years ago she was promoted to operations manager at the Edgewood facility.
"For quite a few years this facility was in the red, and we took it and made it one of the profitable ones within the electrical division," Bond said.
One of CVG's electrical divisions is located in Edgewood. That facility specializes in wire harnesses for construction and agriculture equipment.
Diane Bond's bosses nominated her for the Women in Manufacturing STEP Award. It recognizes outstanding women in the industry of science, technology, engineering and production.
Bond and 121 other women were honored in Washington, D.C.
"I was very shocked; at the same time, very honored," said Bond.
Bond's employees said she's a great leader, communicator and motivator.
"She is a great boss," said employee Dawn Clinton. "The areas I've been in, she's always helped me succeed and improve and grow in the company."
For the last two years, the Edgewood CVG facility has earned the company's highest possible rating for customer service.
Bond said her goal is to maintain that quality while growing the customer base.
Only about 25 percent of the manufacturing labor force is made up of women. One goal of the STEP Award is to get more women into the manufacturing industry.
Diane Bond said the award is humbling.
"I'm a small town girl. A 'thank you' on the phone from my boss is all the acknowledgement I need," she said.
Bond said she's just one person and wouldn't be where she is without lots of support.
Her advice to other women in manufacturing: Don't ever give up on your goals.
