Volunteers help CleanUpCR

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Deb Hutton takes pride in her city, picking up trash all over Cedar Rapids. Saturday she volunteered along Interstate 380.

"I think it's good for the community to see the environment look better," said Hutton. "Whether it's a visitor, whether you presently live here, I think the attitude is better when the community looks better."

Hutton even recruited co-workers to help out.

"You kind of get depressed seeing all this garbage along the side of the highway," said Ruth Hojka. "Some people may just be passing through Cedar Rapids and you want them to and you want to show, to show a good side to our community."

The I-380 cleanup was just one of several events for CleanUpCR Week. City leaders say cleaning this highway is good for everyone, whether they live here or are just passing through.

"We want to make sure that that corridor presents itself that the City of Cedar Rapids is a concerned community ," said Mark Jones, Superintendent of Waste and Recycling Division. "We want to ensure that the travelers through see that we do take pride in our community."

Anyone can help with clean up this week by participating in City Manager Jeff Pomeranz's 1-Bag Challenge. You can pick-up a litter collection kit at any Hy-Vee food or drug store in Cedar Rapids.

As Hutton believes, a little help goes a long way.

"People should do what they can." said Hutton. "It doesn't take much. One bag at a time."

Next weekend, Cedar Rapids will hold neighborhood litter clean-ups and electronic and hazardous materials collection to end CleanUpCR Week.
