Congressman King won't run for U.S. Senate

Posted:

Iowa Republican Congressman, Steve King, will not run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Democratic Senator, Tom Harkin.

Following weeks of speculation about the possible U.S. Senate bid, Congressman King turned to Twitter Friday night to make his intentions known to the public. He will not run for Tom Harkin's Iowa U.S. Senate seat.

King represents Iowa's 4th Congressional District.

King's decision not to run leaves Iowa Democratic Congressman,  Bruce Braley, as the only announced candidate in a race with far-reaching implications on the national political landscape.

King posted on Twitter, "I will not run for Senate in 2014. A Senate race takes me out of urgent battles in Congress that can't wait until 2015. Many thanks to all."

His decision leaves Iowa Republicans still searching for a candidate willing to run against Braley, whom King has referred to in the past as a ‘classic liberal'.

With so much at stake, the Iowa U.S. Senate race for Harkin's seat is likely to be one of the most expensive in state history.

Millions of dollars from out of state influences are expected to pour into Iowa during the campaign.  As was the case in the 2012 campaign, most of it will likely be targeted for television advertising.
