Athlete of the Week: Columbus' Jon Maas

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

If there's a tough play to be made in front of the net -- Columbus senior Jon Maas usually makes it --

Sullivan: "When he gets in a game situation there's some way he's always able to psych himself up for a pk, and he blocked 2, saved 2 games for us this year so far blocking pk's."

Jon has proven somewhat frustrating for opponents this season -- stopping 94 percent of the shots directed his way--

the second year starter credits a former coach as well as his predecessor for his success --

Maas: "The coach that we used to have Jim Morrey, and from our past goalkeeper Michael Goerdt, they've taught me a lot, and I mean Michael was a great person to look up to, and I just try to follow his footsteps."

This season -- Jon has helped this Columbus squad a number four state ranking -- but his most memorable moment came last spring --

In a penalty kick shootout against top ranked Iowa City Regina -- Jon made a pair of huge saves including the game winner to push the Sailors in to the title match -- where they'd eventually win the class 1A title --

Maas: "There's no feeling like it, just the rush you get from blocking one and two is just amazing."

Sullivan: "We always joke with him. We tell him that if you save one pk we're going to win the game, if you save two you're just showing off, and we like that kind of showing off."

Jon -- also an all-metro football player who will be continuing in that sport at Grand View University -- will be a major factor in the Sailors chances for a second state title -- and even in a stacked class 1A field -- the Columbus senior believes his squad has a shot to do it again --

Maas: "We've got to keep pushing, we've got to keep driving, and the past 2 days we went to OT, and that really shows what we can do, and I think it opened up these guys eyes."
