Veterans Memorial has groundbreaking in Janesville

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the future site of the Janesville Veteran's Memorial on Thursday.

Dozens of people attended a short ceremony at 3:00 p.m. where organizers shared future plans for the memorial site at the Riviera Roose Community Center.

"Even though mother nature wasn't very nice to us today, I think this is a prime example of people coming, people showing, people that have supported the entire project. It just goes to show that it's going to happen," said Bill Bloker, a member of the Janesville Veteran's Memorial Committee.

Bloker said he wasn't sure when construction of the memorial site would begin because contractors have been behind schedule because of the weather.

He said more than $80,000 has been raised through donations, but the committee is always looking for other contributions.

Anyone can honor a veteran with a commemorative brick at the monument. Forms for the bricks are available at Janesville City Hall or at the 'Hot News' portion of the Janesville School website:

Organizers said the memorial will pay tribute to all men and women who have served the country.
