Street crews take out plows again to handle Spring snowstorm

John Dilger plows much of Shell Rock, including the local gas station, school and parking lots.

"I don't believe I've ever done it in May. April sometimes, but not in May," said Dilger.

Dilger said he put most of his plow equipment and blades away for the season.

"A couple weeks ago we took them off, and then yesterday we just put them into a storage shed that we rented," he said.

But Dilger had a blade still set aside in case he needed it.

And he hooked it up to his truck on Thursday just in case.

"I don't think we'll have to plow this, it's melting pretty much on the roads, but you never know," he said.

Street crews were also stuck having to take equipment back out of storage for the unexpected snowstorm.

"They spent a lot of the day putting the snow plows back onto the trucks because they were pretty much stripped down into summer maintenance mode," said Pete Hjelmstad from the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Hjelmstad said crews were out for the majority of the day trying to keep roads clean.

In the meantime, Dilger said he hopes he can put away his plow equipment soon for the season.
