WATERLOO (KWWL) -
Three adults and two children are safe after their dog alerted them of a fire in their home.
It happened in at a duplex at the 700 block of Milwaukee Ave around 5 a.m.
Krista Kipper said she was sleeping upstairs when she woke up to smoke and her dog running around.
When the Waterloo Fire Department showed up flames and smoke was coming from the living room. They also had to save the dog. The family cat did not make it out alive.
Fire officials say the home did have smoke detectors, but they were not working at the time of the fire. The Red Cross was called in to help the family. The home is a total loss. At this time, officials aren't sure what caused the fire.
