Area students recognized for turning their lives around

More than thirty area students are recognized as 2013 Turnaround Achievement Award winners at the annual banquet Monday night at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo.

Thirty-seven students from the Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Jesup, and Union school districts were each given an honorary plaque, recognizing significant improvements at school. These students showed strides in attendance, grades, or even their lifestyle and attitude toward school.

Teachers and mentors shared each student's story, while parents and others who have supported these young people were recognized as well.

This is the 20th year of the Turnaround Achievement Awards organization.

Longtime Maple Lanes owner, Bruce Strom, founded the Turnaround Achievement Awards, in partnership with the Waterloo Community Schools. Major sponsors this year included Maple Lanes, Community National Bank and Hawkeye Community College.
