WATERLOO (KWWL) -

People gathered in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids Sunday to remember workers have died on the job.

A memorial service also pays tribute to those injured or made ill on the job and is intended to promote safe jobs for all workers.

It falls on the anniversary of the 1970 passing of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

"I'm praying that someday, that we have this event, and we don't have to read one name in this state," said Cal Eckhoff, president of the Black Hawk Union Council.

In 2011, nearly 4,600 workers died on the job in america, with another 50,000 dying from occupational diseases.
