UPDATE: Student arrested in Iowa City stabbing case

Gabriel Badding Gabriel Badding

Iowa City police say an Illinois teen has been arrested in connection with a Sunday morning stabbing in Iowa City.

Officers were called to the intersection of Washington and Dubuque Streets at around 1:57 a.m. Sunday after a report of two men being stabbed during a fight.

The suspect was described as a shorter, Asian male wearing a red USA jersey.

The University of Iowa issued a Hawk Alert immediately following the incident. Police say numerous tips came in identifying 18-year-old Gabriel E. Badding of Oak Park, Illinois, and a student at the University of Iowa, as a suspect. Police were also told that he could possibly be in Illinois at Western Illinois University.

After confirming the information, Iowa City police contacted Western Illinois University police who found Badding's vehicle on campus on Sunday afternoon. Officers then located Badding and arrested him without incident at around 4:30 p.m.

Badding is charged with willful injury-causing serious injury and willful injury. He is currently in the McDonough County, Illinois jail on $100,000 bond and is awaiting extradition to Iowa.

Both victims were taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. One has several stab wounds to the upper body area, two of which are near vital organs. The second victim received a deep stab wound in the upper arm when he tried to help the first victim. Both are expected to survive.
