Sweet Tooth: Lizzy Mae's Cupcakes & Sweets in Waverly

Lizzy Mae's Cupcakes and Sweets opened October 25 in Waverly. Dawn Pursell is the owner. The name "Lizzy Mae's" is the first names of her grandmothers.

Pursell said that's where her love of baking first began, on visits to her grandparents.

"They always had that special touch and that's what we try to do," said Dawn Pursell.

Pursell's mom also previously owned a bakery in the Cedar Rapids area. So baking is in her blood.

"I've always wanted to open a breakfast, lunch or sweet shop as long as I can remember. That's what I wanted to do, and I've worked in the restaurant business for about 18 years," said Pursell.

The idea to finally open her own business came after she left the restaurant business about two years ago for an office job.

"That wasn't for me. I'm a people person, and I like to be doing stuff with people," said Pursell.

Pursell and her mom then started selling cupcakes and bakery items at the farmers' market and county fair. Then the Waverly Chamber of Commerce helped her find a store front on Bremer Avenue.

It depends on the day, but the business can make between 300 and 400 cupcakes.

"We change our flavors everyday and we post them on facebook so people will know what our flavors will be for that day," said Dawn Pursell.

Everything from banana split to chocolate chocolate to Snickers. Besides cupcakes, Pursell also makes cake balls, cookies and cakes.

Everything is homemade and Pursell said she tries to give her sweets a personal touch. She hopes eating her cupcakes makes someone a little happier.
