As Iowans begin to see warmer weather coming, more and more are heading outdoors. For many in Dubuque Co., that warmer weather means getting more involved in their community.
Hannah Church and her family stood patiently at Heritage Pond Saturday morning waiting to catch some trout. This was Church's second time fishing, but first time with her new fishing pole.
"We were at our grandpa's, me and my sister, and someone gave us two presents. They were two fishing poles." Church said.
The time spent with her family also allowed Church to bond with her grandfather, James Baste.
"I think she is doing a great job and I am hoping that we do get some fish to bite here in a bit," Baste said.
Across town, volunteers raked leaves at the Dubuque Arboretum as a part of Dubuque's Days of Caring. Brittani Olinger volunteered raking with some friends. She enjoyed the nice weather while cleaning the arboretum.
"The gloves are getting really hot on your hands because it's just so nice out." Olinger said.
While some volunteered, others decided to get exercise. Saturday morning Loras College hosted a Rock Bowl 5K run. The run took place near the Loras College campus and included some hills. Gina Dacey is a sophomore lacrosse player at Loras College. She had prepared for the 5K with her teammates but was nervous about those hills.
"I'm nervous about the hills; especially I think Cox Street is going to be pretty tough." Dacey said.
All proceeds from the event went towards the Beautify Loras event, an event to enhance the aesthetics of the campus. At all events, one thing was certain. On a day the sun is shining bright and a warm temperature is sweeping across the state, many just wanted to enjoy the nice weather.
