Walkers raise money to support families touched by autism

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Westdale Mall in Cedar Rapids was crowded Saturday morning with people raising money for a good cause. Saturday marked the sixth annual fundraiser walk for the East Central Iowa Autism Society.

This walk is the group's biggest fundraiser of the year, typically bringing about $25,000. All of the money goes towards helping support families with an autistic member, often paying for treatments insurance doesn't cover.

"We fund several projects during the year that are out of pocket, things that insurance does not cover," said Cindy Dircks, Co-President of the East Central Iowa Autism Society. "We are finding each year insurance covers less and less, so the funding's very important."

In addition to the walk there was a silent raffle and resource fair, where families could learn more about organizations that provide services and help for people on the autism spectrum.
