Four years of same sex marriage in Iowa

Saturday marked the 4th anniversary of Iowa's same sex marriage law taking effect.

Kate and Trish Varnum were the plaintiffs in the case Varnum v Brien. The Iowa Supreme Court's unanimous decision in 2009 established same sex marriage in Iowa.

On April 27, 2009, the Varnums received their marriage license. Now, they are married and have an 18-month-old adopted son named Alex.

"It was important for us," said Kate. "It's important for our friends and our family to have that recognition as well."

"It's also important for our son," said Trish. "He'll never know a time where his parents were not married."

The Varnums say they know the Iowa Supreme Court ruling was not just about them but were glad to have a small part in making marriage possible for same sex couples in Iowa.
