Police look for suspects after a dog is decapitated and beaten

A dog was found beaten to death by the side of some railroad tracks in Fort Madison Friday.

The employee of PAW Animal Shelter found the body of one of its shelter dogs decapitated. His tail and ribs appeared to be broken, and his head was cut from his body.

The shelter workers say Jack the dog had been missing four days before his body was found.

They believe more than one person may be behind this and more information is being withheld to help with the investigation.

"This is a bragging crime, somebody, somewhere, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, someone's going to say something," PAW Animal Shelter Director Sandy Brown said.

The shelter is not releasing any details of the dog because they hope something will come forward.

Under Iowa law, animal abuse or torture convictions carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison and fines.

The penalties increase if a person is convicted more than once.
