Clarke University students collect wheelchairs, mobility devices

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The goal is to help 'Wheels for the World.'

That's why some Clarke University students are looking for old wheelchairs, canes, crutches and walkers.

For several years now, students with Clarke's physical therapy club are collecting old mobility assisting devices for the Wheels for the World program.

Club member Hannah Holt said the devices will be refurbished and sent to under-served populations in developing nations.

"We actually bring them in here and them send them off to a prison in Kansas, where they get restored," Holt said, "and then they send them off to places like Haiti, Dominican Republic, Bosnia, I think was another one."

The students will be on Clarke's campus Saturday morning from eight to noon collecting old devices, though they don't accept wooden canes and crutches.

They'll be outside Catherine Byrne Hall on Clarke Drive in Dubuque.

Folks with donations can also call the Clarke University Physical Therapy Department at 563-588-6382 to schedule a donation.
