IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

One of three men arrested after an Iowa City shooting death will spend the rest of his life in prison after he was convicted of first-degree murder.

A judge sentence Justin Marshall, 22, to jail Friday.

Marshall is accused of shooting landlord John Versypt at Broadway Condominiums in what authorities say was a botched robbery in 2009.

Friends and family of John Versypt read victim impact statements, including Versypt's window Janet.

In spite of a jury finding Marshall guilty of first degree murder in February, Marshall told the judge he's innocent when addressing the court.

Afterwards- Janet Versypt found that remark hard to stomach.

"It kind of broke my heart a jury of his peers said that he was guilty and the evidence said that he was guilty," Janet Versypt said.

Versypt, 64, lived in Illinois but was in Iowa City to check on one of his rental properties.

After the robbery, Marshall was arrested in Texas.

Two other men were also arrested for the crime.

Charles Thompson took a plea deal to testify against Marshall. Courtney White's trial is scheduled for later this year.
