Regents approves new UI mental health center and Kinnick upgrade

At Thursday's meeting in Cedar Falls, the Board of Regents accepted the recommendations for a new center focusing on mental health, approved a new upgrade at Kinnick Stadium and said goodbye to the Board President.

The Board considered and accepted the proposal for the University of Iowa's Center for Child Health Improvement and Innovation, which will be dedicated to improving the state's disability and mental health system. The new center will be funded through the affordable care act.

Regents also approved a major upgrade to Kinnick Stadium, the addition of a new scoreboard and sound system for the stadium. Officials with the University of Iowa say the project will cost no more than $8 milllion. The new system will be paid for with the gifts and earnings of the UI Athletic Department.

Thursday was also a last for Board President Craig Lang. Lang did not win the two-thirds majority needed to be confirmed for a second term.

Lang reflected on the accomplishments of his tenure during his goodbyes.

"The most important thing that we have accomplished is that we've broadened the awareness to all Iowans that the general funding for public education, higher public education was dropping precipitiously and it had to be stopped," Land said.

Senate Democrats said they were troubled by decisions made during Lang's tenure.
