DES MOINES (KWWL) -

This summer will mark one year since the abduction of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

The two cousins went missing July 13th. Their bodies were found in a Bremer County Park last December.

On Thursday, a special agent working the case received an award in Des Moines. Special Agent Mike Roehrkasse with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation received the Single Act of Assistance Award.

It's part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Evansdale Police Chief Kent Smock wrote to nominate special agent Roehrkasse. Smock says Roehrkasse is and will continue to be dedicated to this case.

Roehrkasse has been with the DCI for three years and said he was honored and humbled to receive the award.

Agent Roehrkasse has been assigned to this Evansdale case full time. He said it isn't a cold case and they keep actively working on it every day.

He says there were a couple of things he has taken away for working on this case.

"A couple things struck me as number one: how dark mankind can be but at the same time to watch an entire community really rally around a family. I mean these girls because our girls and we saw these families and these girls as if they were our own family members," said Roehrkasse.

A former Waterloo Police Officer will also receive an award Thursday. According to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, Tina Nobis will receive the Continuous Service Award.

Nobis assisted with the investigation of PFG founder Russell Wasendorf Senior.
