CASCADE (KWWL) -

Some 350 teenagers took to the streets of Cascade and Bernard Wednesday to better their communities.

As part of the second annual Cougar Pride Day, students at Cascade junior high and high schools volunteered at more than 50 work sites around the area.

Tasks included doing yard work for elderly neighbors, cleaning the American Legion Ball Park and picking up trash along roads.

Cascade High School senior Mike Woods said the event is part of a larger feeling throughout the community.

"The small community kind of brings everyone together and you do have that close-knit kind of family atmosphere," Woods said. "That leaves you wanting to help around town if you see that things are kind of in disrepair, there's something that needs to be cleaned, you might not even wait for a day. I know people that'll go and just offer to help people with work."

Cougar Pride Day is part of the Cascade schools' character education program. The emphasis of this community service day was "caring" and "citizenship."
