Hawkeyes to make changes to spring game format

Posted:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa fans have wanted it for years, and it appears it's finally happening.  Saturday's spring game is set to be a 4 quarter scrimmage, with a few modified rules.  In the past, Iowa's closed out the spring schedule with an open practice with a short scrimmage at the end.

The new format is a welcome change for players like junior receiver Kevonte Martin-Manley.

"We're excited about that," said Martin-Manley on Wednesday afternoon. "We watch other teams around the country, around the Big Ten, and they're having games.  We always push for that.  We wanted a game as well.  It just brings a little more excitement."

The new format will also have some new scoring rules for both the offense and defense.  The new rules are as follows:

The offense will be awarded points for touchdowns (6), field goals (3), extra points (1), explosive plays (1) and three consecutive first downs (1). An explosive play is defined by a rush of 12-plus yards or a pass of 16-plus yards.

The defense will be awarded points for touchdowns (7), sudden change (4), turnovers (3), sacks (2), PAT block (1), and 3-and-outs (1). A sudden change occurs if the offense starts a series inside the plus-35 and is held to a field goal or less.

Saturday's scrimmage begins at 2 PM at Kinnick Stadium.  Gates will open up at 1 PM.
