CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

On Tuesday night, 84 veterans received a heroes' welcome home.

It was the first Honor Flight of 2013 out of the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids.

Veterans who served during World War II and Korean era took the trip of a lifetime. They departed bright and early and spent the day in the nation's capital visiting the memorials.

They returned home to a large crowd, who cheered for them and thanked them for their service.

"Tonight is what really got me," said Katherine Karey, who served in the Navy during WWII. "I couldn't believe there was that many people here -- my gosh!"

Veterans do not have to pay to go on an Honor Flight. The program is funded entirely through donations.
