CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The City of Cedar Falls says a second leak was found in a sanitary sewer main after repairs were made to an earlier leak that sent an estimated 45,000 gallons of wastewater into the Cedar River.

Mike Nyman, Public Works Supervisor, says the first leak was discovered at the bike trail near Lookout Park and was stopped at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Nyman says a second leak was found after fixing the first one. He says the second leak sent a small amount of raw wastewater onto the trail and into the Cedar River.

The leak was stopped on Tuesday afternoon and repairs were completed Wednesday morning.

The recreation trail is closed between Pfeiffer Park and the trail parking lot on Park Drive through Thursday afternoon. People are asked to stay out of that area.

The bike trail is closed between Pfeiffer Park and Lookout Park while repairs are made.

Once the trail is re-opened, bikers are asked to be cautious because a section of asphalt had to be removed.

A gravel patch will remain in place until permanent repairs can be made.
