UPDATE: Governor adds three more counties to disaster proclamation

Governor Terry Branstad, who issued a disaster proclamation last Friday for five Iowa counties hit by flooding, has now issued a proclamation for three more counties.

Branstad announced on Tuesday that the Iowa Individual Assistance Program has been activated for Iowa, Lee and Muscatine Counties.

All three counties, along with Cedar, Johnson, Mahaska, Scott, and Washington Counties, were hit hard last week when heavy rains and thunderstorms caused flooding which damaged homes and businesses.

Through the Iowa Individual Assistance Program, property owners are eligible for up to $5,000 in grants. Households with incomes up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level, or a maximum annual income of $39,060, for a family of three, are eligible for the grants.

The money can be used for home or car repairs, replacement of clothing or food, and for temporary housing.

The grant application and instructions are available at the "Disaster Assistance" link on the Iowa Department of Human Services website, www.dhs.iowa.gov.  Applications must be received within 45 days.
