High-rise office building proposed for downtown Cedar Rapids

The face of downtown Cedar Rapids may be changing.  That's because a proposal to build a multi-level office building downtown is moving before the Cedar Rapids City Council.

CRST wants to move its headquarters there.

The Cedar Rapids-based company would move from the southwest side to an office building on the site of the former 1st Street Parkade - across from the Alliant Tower.

The city council currently owns the site - which is now a parking lot after the parkade was torn down after the floods of 2008.

If the city sells the land, developers say the building would house the CRST corporate offices, provide office space for other companies and contain a parking garage.

The city council will begin consideration at its meeting Tuesday.
