CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Hundreds walked through Prairie Lakes Park in Cedar Falls Sunday for the Great Strides Walk, supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Iowa.

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease, affecting the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 kids and adults nationwide.

The Great Strides Walk helps raise money toward research and medicines helping cystic fibrosis patients live longer, with the goal of ultimately curing the disease.

"For the first time in history, we have drugs in our pipeline that treat the basic defect of the gene as opposed to just the symptoms of CF, and we believe a cure can be found.  That's why we're walking today," said Claire Scholl with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Iowa.

Last year, Great Strides walks around the country raised $40 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
