Waterloo Quota Club selects two members as "Volunteer of the Year"

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Jean Moore and Sandy Lawry are both members of the Waterloo Quota International Club. Recently, they were recognized for their years of volunteer service to the local club.

The day we taped the story, they were working at the Quota Club's 93rd brunch at the UAW Hall in Waterloo. Moore joined Quota 33 years ago and Lawry started 13 years ago.

"I got in because I wanted to do something that made a difference," said Sandy Lawry.

Quota International is a service organization that's dedicated to giving back to the community through a variety of programs. But members said a lot of people have never heard of it.

"Unfortunately, most people don't know what it is. So I tell them we're a service organization. Our club was founded in 1926," said Lawry.

Just to name a few projects, the club provides eyeglasses to children, delivers bears to hospitals and support to Cops-n-Kids and Medals for Mettle.

The annual brunch is one of the group's largest fundraisers. The other big fundraiser is nut sales, which kick off in October. Between nut sales and this brunch, the Waterloo Quota Club raises more than $17,000 a year for community programs.

"It's a great group to belong to," said Jean Moore.

Jean Moore is a past office holder and has led the nut sales for 17 years. Sandy Lawry is the chair of the Growth and Development Committee and co-chair of Service to Disadvantaged Women and Children.

The women were both selected as "volunteer of the year" for the Waterloo Quota Club.

"I was excited and happy," said Moore.

Both said they appreciate the recognition, but it takes a whole group to accomplish all the club's service activities.

They simply hope more people get involved with Quota and help support the local community.

The Waterloo Quota International Club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Knights of Columbus Hall. For more information, click here.
